Are you ending your day disappointed in your productivity? Never making it through your to-do list or doing anything that makes you feel accomplished for the day?
Stop winging it and start your day with intention and focus.
The right morning routine can help you do that!
The benefits to a morning routine
- You’re tapping into your body’s natural circadian rhythm
Your body prefers to work around the rise and fall of the sun including digestion, hormones, and the brain. Just waking up with the sun alone – without a routine – can help you be more productive throughout the day. - You’re getting in touch with yourself and setting intentions
Taking the time to set intentions for the day, identify priorities, and determine what you will focus on can help you be more mindful and ensure you get the most important things done. - You’re building good habits
When you attach activities to a routine, it’s easier to turn them into habits. Your brain knows what to do without much effort from you to remember what needs to be done and how.
So, what should your morning routine include?
A morning routine isn’t about checking off items on your to-do list. It’s about doing things that get you into the right mindset and energize you. Here are a few ideas on getting your day started the right way.
- Reading
Your mind is fresh and rejuvenated in the morning. Reading a book can stretch your mind and set the tone for the day preparing you to tackle anything. - Journaling
There are many types of journaling including gratitude, journal prompts, or brain dumps. No matter which you prefer, doing this in the morning can help you get your day started with intention.Exercise
Move your body! If building muscle is your priority, then do some strength training or if its stretching then maybe yoga is best for you. Either way, moving your body helps you make healthy choices and stay energized throughout the day. - Get outside
Soaking in some sun and breathing fresh air helps you tap into that circadian rhythm. Consider moving your body with a walk or just relaxing outside with a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. - Planning
A key part of setting yourself up for a productive and successful day is to set your priorities and create a schedule for execution. Doing this first thing helps you avoid being reactive and gives you control over your day from the start. - Breakfast
Whether it’s high protein, a green smoothie, or oats, eating enjoyable foods that nourish your body is a great way to start your day. - Make your bed
Taking a few minutes to make your bed in the morning can help you feel organized, proud, and confident to tackle your day. It’s an easy way to feel productive first thing. - Drink water
Drinking a glass of water in the morning can boost your energy, ensure you meet your hydration goals, and help you feel healthier.
While these ideas are typical for a productive morning, the key is customizing your routine to suit your lifestyle and goals. Here’s how you can create a morning routine that works for you.
How to create your personalized morning routine
- Assess your current habits
How do your mornings look now? Are they disorganized or productive? Is there room for improvement? What time do you wake up? Which areas of my life could benefit most from a new routine? - Set goals
What do you want your morning routine to accomplish? Do you want to focus on health, work, productivity, etc.? - Start small
Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many changes at the same time. Start by adding one or two activities then build on that.
The way we start our day determines everything that follows. You’ll soon realize how much better you’ll feel throughout the day when you start your day with intention. There may be some days you don’t follow your routine but don’t be too hard on yourself, tomorrow is a new day.
