This time of year can be challenging for my skin. The dry air tends to draw out moisture, and the cold weather often decreases my thirst, making it essential to consciously stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. When dryness sets in, I make it a point to incorporate a few extra practices into my daily routine. Staying hydrated involves both internal and external efforts so my approach includes both.

Here are 10 ways to keep your skin nourished and hydrated.
- Drink plenty of water
The amount of water you need to drink varies depending on factors like age, gender, activity level, climate, and overall health. However, a general guideline is 2.7 liters per day for women and 3.7 liters per day for men. Listening to your body is key, if you’re thirsty, drink. - Eat water-rich foods
Water-rich foods are an excellent way to boost your hydration while enjoying nutritious and refreshing snacks. Some great options include foods like watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, oranges, tomatoes, zucchini, spinach, bell peppers, and celery in your diet. - Add some healthy fats to your diet
Healthy fats play a vital role in maintaining hydrated, supple skin by strengthening its natural barrier and retaining moisture. Some excellent sources of skin-friendly fats include avocados, salmon and fatty fish, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and coconut oil. - Use hydrating skincare products
Hydrating skincare ingredients can help replenish and retain moisture in your skin, keeping it soft and supple. Use products that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe vera, niacinamide, or urea which attract moisture to the skin. - Seal in moisture
Some skincare ingredients are great for sealing in moisture by creating a protective barrier on your skin. Follow hydrating serums with a rich moisturizer containing ceramides, squalane, oils, or shea butter to lock in hydration. - Add facial mists to your skincare routine
Use refreshing, alcohol-free facial sprays throughout the day for an extra hydration boost. - Invest in a humidifier
Especially during colder months, humidifiers prevent air from becoming too dry which can dehydrate your skin. - Avoid hot showers
Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils. Use lukewarm water instead. - Use mild cleaners
Use gentle, non-foaming cleansers to avoid drying out your skin. - Use sunscreen daily
A broad-spectrum SPF helps protect your skin’s barrier and prevents moisture loss caused by UV exposure.
Caring for your skin during colder months doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By incorporating these simple habits into your daily routine, you can combat dryness, nourish your skin, and maintain a healthy, radiant glow all season long. Hydration starts within, so balancing internal efforts with external care is key to keeping your skin happy and healthy.
